Queensland Fire & Emergency Services (QFES), C.A.T. Workshop No. 4 – July 2023 South Western Region - Senior Leadership Team
Rachel Thomas, Executive Support Officer, South Western Region of the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services (QFES)) reached out to ZSIC as part of building on QFES cultural capabilities. This came about as a result of Steele Davies’ (QFES A/Inspector – Ministerial Liaison Officer, CLLO & Ministerial Services) proactive approach to bring cultural and meaningful change within the QFES service.
ZSIC’ was engaged to create and deliver a half-day CAT (Cultural Awareness Training) to twenty QFES Senior Officers that are responsible for carrying out a broad range of services throughout Queensland, with Indigenous communities.
This engagement provided ZSIC with the opportunity to work with and alongside the QFES Senior Leadership Team – South Western Region, under the leadership of A/Assistant Commissioner Jason Lawler.
The participants brought many of their professional and lived experiences into the training room. This enhanced the entire experience, whilst bringing about intrinsic motivational change, on both professional and personal spaces, further enabling each of them to apply new approaches when required, with First Nations Peoples.

Best presentation on cultural awareness, Zeke made it very engaging and fun with an appreciation of the challenges we face, but also the good we can now take forward.

Very good oversight on cultural awareness. Need more time than 3 hours to get to helping find solutions.

A good session, appreciate how difficult it is to condense the session to fit our timelines.
